Global Engineering Solutions (GES) provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering services for a phased 2,500 sf renovation of the Emergency Department. The renovation incorporates a “super fast-track” area for receiving less severe emergency patients and an ICU, which supports patients from surrounding hospitals.
Due to the sensitive and complex nature of the renovated spaces, special attention was paid to the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems. The medical gas systems were designed per NFPA 99 as well as the University of Maryland Medical Center’s requirements. The new lighting system utilizes a combination of linear fluorescent and compact fluorescent lamps to comply with building standards. Emergency egress lighting and emergency illumination for critical space/functions such as nurse stations and plaster/cast room and emergency duplex receptacles in exam rooms is supplied by the emergency electrical distribution system. Work to the fire protection system included modifying and updating the existing sprinkler systems to provide full coverage by hydraulic design to afford complete fire protection coverage. GES was also responsible for designing the expansion of the data and communications system and the nurse call system.
